The Hermitage

Perhaps the best known historic site on Cat Island is Mount Alvernia, past home and hermitage of Father Jerome Hawes, an Anglican missionary turned Catholic priest. He retired to Cat Island some time in early 1940 and lived out his final days as a recluse. He built a miniature monastery and carved out a series of steps from solid rock to represent The Stations of The Cross. It lies high atop Como Hill in New Bight where hundreds of tourist make it a point to go when visiting that settlement for the breathtaking view of the entire island.
Old Bight, with its rich soil, was once a place where cotton plantations thrived.
