Barbados Car Rental

Everything you need to know to rent a car in Barbados.

There is much to see and do on Barbados, and much of the more populated areas of the island can be seen via taxis or public transportation. Or if you prefer to explore the island on your own, you can rent a car.

If you want to rent a car while on Barbados, you'll find that there are no major U.S. car rental agencies on the island. However, there are a number of local firms that rent various types of vehicles from SUVs and compact cars to minimokes (small, open-sided vehicles) and Jeeps.

To rent a car in Barbados, you will need to be at least 21 years old; the maximum age is 70 to 75. The individual car rental agency regulates the driving age, so be sure to ask what the age requirements are before renting a car. You will need a valid driver's license, plus you will need to obtain a Barbados Driving License from the rental agency, the airport, the Hastings, Worthing, or Holetown police stations, or from the Ministry of Transport. The fee for the license is $10.00 BDS and the permit is valid for one year.

Car rental rates are expensive. Rates vary according to the make of the vehicle, whether it is air conditioned, and whether it has an automatic or manual transmission. There is also a 15% government tax on all vehicles. Barbados also requires that the driver have third party insurance. Be cautious when renting a car, and check the insurance and liability issues. While many rental agencies are reputable, there have been customer complaints about overcharging and the poor quality of some rental vehicles. To ensure that you have a car during peak midwinter season, you would be wise to reserve it in advance. Many agencies offer discounted rates if you rent for a period of days, and their fees generally include insurance, pickup and delivery service, maps, 24-hour emergency service, and unlimited mileage.

Most car rental companies have child seats for rent. Also be sure to inquire about local roadside assistance should your car break down. Ask if your rental company will deliver your rental car to your hotel, many do. This will avoid delays at the airport.

Barbados drivers drive on the left-hand side of the road. Be aware that many of Barbados' roads are narrow, and that caution should be used in driving on back roads because many of these are not maintained as well as the main roads. Road signs are limited so proceed with caution. Be sure to get a road map from your rental agency.
