Roots and Grasses is located at the Pelican Craft Centre, Bridgetown, St. Michael, and is owned and operated by the experienced and highly skilled Ireka Jelani and her husband, Princepine Jelani.
The inherent talent of the artist Ireka was enhanced when she traveled on a Commonwealth Scholarship to Ghana, West Africa, for one year, where she visited remote villages and spent weeks learning authentic Ghanaian basketry. On her return to Barbados, she has teamed up with her husband to produce a wide range of the some of the finest baskets in Barbados.
The products of Roots and Grasses include laundry baskets, plant baskets, magazine baskets, shopping and picnic baskets, a variety of fruit baskets, trays, vases, sewing baskets, mats and much more. These items are hand-woven using indigenous Barbadian grasses as well as various types of grasses sourced within the Caribbean region and extra-regionally. Colour is used to highlight intricate designs and patterns woven into the baskets, and helps to add character to the creations.
At Roots and Grasses you will always find a basket that is new, different, and of a very high quality. Whatever your order Roots and Grasses can weave it!
