2010 Summer Regattas Get Underway

Whether your passion is a longtime experience in skippering  sleek yachts, taking your hobie cat out on your favorite hidden cove, or just savoring the spectacle of the region’s best sailing events, there will be something that fits your category with the great diversity of sailing craft competing on Caribbean waters this summer.

With its many islands and excellent marine conditions, it’s no surprise that the Bahamas has long been host to an impressive collection of classic yachting events.  The island of Abaco sees the 35th annual Regatta Time in Abaco from July 2 – 10, with races over eight days that are interspersed with a good deal of social events at each leg.  Other seasonal events that attract yachtsmen from around the globe are the venerable Long Island Regatta, raced at the island of the same name this month over June 3 – 5 from its site at Salt Pond, the second largest such event in the Bahamas, and the Grand Bahama Regatta, which launches from Taino Beach on the island with lots of onshore festivities throughout the day on June 17.

St. Maarten/Martin has an interesting mix all its own of ocean racing over the summer months.  Leading off on the Dutch side under the auspices of the St. Maarten Yacht Club on June 12 – 13 is the Heineken Light Caribbean LASER Championships. The club then stages the North Sails Regatta – Caribbean Keelboat Championships on June 19 -20, and also the St. Maarten Yacht Club Keelboat Race on June 20.  Keelboaters, take due note!

Finally, the serene southeastern island nation of Grenada will be staging its 45th annual Carriacou Regatta Festival along the shores of its small sister islet of Carriacou, over July 31 – August 3 this year.  Their organizing committee clearly works hard to keep both resident and visting participants very energized over three days, this year promising “several onshore events, such as donkey races, the greasy pole and the Ms. Aquaval Queen Show.”  Now, where else can you find some world-class sailing and do all that as well, except in the Caribbean?
