Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort, Curacao (Ex-Hyatt Curacao)

Despite the name change, the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort (formerly The Hyatt Regency Curacao) is still one of the premier destinations in the Caribbean, for good reason. Their luxurious accommodations and superb service continually land them in the top hotel rankings for the entire Caribbean.

The change in hotel management, from Hyatt Corporation to Benchmark Hospitality International, took place last December. An owner’s representative said, “This is an exciting development for the resort, its employees, and the thousands of international guests we soon expect to welcome.” The transition must have been seamless for U.S. News ranked the Santa Barbara #1 of all the hotels in Curacao in their rankings for 2013.

The resort is most famous for its golf course. “Designed by Pete Dye and opened in April 2010, Old Quarry Golf Course takes shape on a naturally contoured site overlooking the Duch Duch Caribbean Sea and the sheltered bay known as Spanish Water.” Dye said of the view, “First you see the Dutch Caribbean, then the bay and the boats, then Tafelberg, that big mountain that gave our course its name. The land is incredible – the contours, the views, the ruins, the setting. Here the topography has enough movement; you don’t have to create it.”

So, is this resort all about golf? Tennis Resorts Online editor Roger Cox begs to differ: there are “four handsomely laid out clay courts kept playable by an underground watering system called Hydro-Grid (unusual to find in the Caribbean) and managed by an experienced teaching pro.”

I visited last while the resort was under the Hyatt flag and can attest to it’s beauty – from the golf course to the restaurants – it is a magnificent property.

Most helpful to prospective visitors, however, are the experiences of previous visitors. Here are just two of hundreds of five-star reviews:

“The servers at the restaurants were very gracious and the food was the best I’ve had during a Caribbean vacation. (Paulene and shernette at Medi were amazing!) If you plan on dining outside of the resort, keep in mind you have to drive 20 minutes to Get ANYWHERE because it take 10 minutes just to leave the hotel grounds.” (Mira Z. from Northville, MI)

“I attended a conference at the resort in early January [2013] with my wife. We were very happy with our room – Ocean View in private area of resort. The furnishings were first class and luxurious. The buffet breakfast in the Medi Restaruant was exceptional.” (USMAGrad, Savannah, GA)
