St Maarten Heinekin Regatta takes place from March 9 to 13

The next St Maarten Heinekin Regatta will take place between March 9 and March 13.

The regatta, which is named for the Caribbean island of St.Maarten and its principle sponsor the Heineken Company, started in 1980 with a modest 12 boats competing. In 2013 200 hundred boats competed and the event operator, the St. Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation hopes to have at least that many participating in 2014.

The regatta is as well known for its parties as it is for the yacht racing. Visitors can expect to enjoy plenty of good food, ice cold beer, and musical performances from bands such as Red Foo and the Party Rock Crew.  Past performers include the Black Eyed Peas, the Marley Brothers, Maxi Priest and Wyclef Jean.

The four day event has attracted 2,500 sailors and 1,000 support staff to the island in past years, sailing boats from as far away as Russia and Brazil. The regatta attracted people from 25 different countries for the racing and parties.

Sr, Maarten is on the northern end of the Lesser Antilles island chain, 180 miles east of Puerto Rico. It is 37 miles square and boasts of 37 different beaches. It is called the “culinary capital of the Caribbean” with more than 365 restaurants serving cuisines from around the world. The island also has about 20 night clubs and lounges, 10 spas, and 14 casinos.

Day time activities include boating, hiking, and deep-sea fishing. There are even 17 different art galleries displaying examples of local and regional art.
