Top 5 Caribbean Spas

No need to rely on the great spa towns of Europe or spa resorts of North America for your wellness retreat - nowadays, there is plenty to choose from across the Caribbean.

From one island location to the next, you can find world-class spas onsite at leading hotels that combine the best of European, North American and Asian spa treatments and therapies with the most original of their own island remedies, herbs and produce to create a holistically Caribbean spa experience along your way. Just a few of the most innovative and luxurious in this category across the region to consider for your own ultimate Caribbean spa bliss might be:

Anguilla

Cuisinart - Venus Spa and Fitness Center
This recently renovated 27,000 square foot spa acquired several distinct new features - a Men's Club Room, the first aqua therapy pool in the Caribbean, and treatments inspired from the fresh herbs and produce grown at the resort's onsite hydroponic farm. Hydroponics is the process of cultivating plants in water and a nutrient-rich fertilizer solution, without soil. One example of how the Spa uses this resource is the "Hydroponic Cucumber & Aloe Wrap" - cucumbers harvested hydroponically are then combined with fresh aloe to provide instant relief from sunburn and help restore moisture to dry, dehydrated skin. A soothing seaweed cream application completes the treatment. Offering the latest in therapeutic treatments and spa technology coupled with the highest standards of customer service, the two buildings that house the spacious new Venus Spa and Fitness Center were designed in Greek-style architecture and boast breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. The other state-of-the-art additions include 16 new treatment rooms, VIP Suite, an expanded fitness center, co-ed relaxation room with sea views, couple's suites and an exclusively designed indoor aqua therapy pool. Among the 16 new treatment rooms are wet rooms and lavish massage and facial rooms. The men's and women's locker rooms feature Swiss showers and Hammams with deluge rain showers. The spa also features two very spacious couples suites that include a couples Swiss shower and couples Jacuzzi soaking tub. Both suites also come with gorgeous private outdoor terraces and lounge chairs.

Barbados

Sandy Lane - The Spa at Sandy Lane
A recent 2008 property-wide makeover saw The Spa at Sandy Lane receive renovations to its 14 treatment rooms, a new panoramic sauna, a Rhassoul Bath, and introduced a new line of products and treatments by exclusive skincare line Anne Semonin. Located adjacent to The Spa's hydrotherapy pool, the Rhassoul Bath offers a revitalizing spa experience where ambient sound, light, aromatherapy and water temperature combine to moisturize and detoxify the body. Guests first cover their entire bodies in pink Kaolin clay before being escorted into the Rhassoul; as they lounge on the mosaic tiled chairs, dry heat will harden the clay as it pulls out impurities from the skin. A fifteen-minute steam bath then softens the clay before a warm, cascading shower washes it away to reveal softer skin. The new Anne Semonin skincare range features personalized and holistic treatments in which the spa guest receives a full consultation from a trained therapist. For guests wishing to incorporate the warmth and tranquillity of Barbados into their Spa Experience or any signature treatment, The Spa has expanded their offerings to include treatments inspired by local ingredients, textures, and scents with elements such as Bajan sugar cane, coconut oil, and banana leaves.

Puerto Rico

W Retreat & Spa (Vieques Island) - Spa Chakra
Set on the pristine island of Vieques with 30-acres of beachfront property at W Retreat & Spa, the resort's signature Spa Chakra is a serene sanctuary offering seaside yoga and authentic holistic treatments inspired by the island. The Spa includes more than 6,000 square feet of space, an array of health and beauty therapies, as well as a selection of luxurious products, featuring Sue Devitt's Microquatic(TM) range, the separate spa pavilion offers a serene Oceanside getaway for the guest looking to fully embrace the unique vibe of the island. Rockwell Group Europe designed the spa, setting a welcoming tone that has been inspired by the holistic nature of its surroundings. Rivulets and canals flow throughout the space and scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean invite spa-goers to indulge in its relaxed luxury. In the main pavilion, manicures and pedicures will be offered in a social sunken room situated in the middle, and water therapy will take place in treatment rooms with views of private stone gardens. The pavilion is surrounded by captivating gardens with strategically placed seating areas and pools, and eight private, vine-covered indoor/outdoor treatment rooms are separated from the main pavilion by a reflecting pool, offering guests additional seclusion as stress and tensions melt away. A full selection of beauty and holistic treatments are also available at Spa Chakra.

Nevis

Four Seasons Nevis - The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Nevis
A 12,000 square foot sanctuary of well-being that draws on the spiritual inspiration of Nevis Peak, The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Nevis's gingerbread-trimmed treatment cottages blend into a landscape of lush tropical gardens. The West Indian Colonial design boasts elements such as an outdoor hydrotherapy circuit including an open-air stone Jacuzzi reminiscent of a sugar mill ruin and a water fountain fashioned out of an antique "copper" once used in sugar production. A Japanese-inspired cold plunge pool is for the brave, but it boosts circulation on the outdoor hydrotherapy circuit. The Rum Tonic, Mango Sea Salt Glow, Nevisian Massage and Papaya Hot Stones Massage are on the menu of indigenous treatments designed to reflect the rhythms of the islands. For a bona fide West Indian experience, the soothing Nevisian massage tempts health and wellness addicts with its use of all-natural native ingredients. Dry skin is exfoliated with the Spa's unique blend of Nevisian volcanic sand, which is loaded with minerals and aromatherapy oils. Beachside massages are available in private spa cabanas situated just steps from the surf. In-room massage and spa services are also available. The Spa's 12 treatment rooms include six outdoor freestanding cottages (which includes one deluxe couples treatment suite) and six indoor treatment rooms, which includes two wet treatment rooms equipped with Vichy Showers. A Beach Cabana on the north end of Pinney's Beach is available for Oceanside massages. A light Spa lunch menu is available and served to guests in the outdoor spa gardens.
