Golfing in Jamaica
By Lisa Mullins Bishop, Caribbean Edge Staff Writer
Golfers wanting to hit the links while enjoying a respite on a Caribbean island would do well to consider Jamaica. The island is home to number of championship golf courses, including some laid out by such legendary golf designers as Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr., Gary Player, and Ralph Plummer.
Tryall Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay is considered one of the top courses in the world. Ralph Plummer designed the par 71, 6,920-yard course, which has hosted the Jamaica Classic and the Johnnie Walker World Championship. Three Palms Ocean Course at the Wyndham Rose Hall Golf and Beach Resort has been named one of the top five golf courses in the world and has been the site of several invitational tournaments, including the Jamaica Open. The par-72, 6,598-yard course is known for its challenging mountain and seaside layout and its famous eighth hole, which doglegs onto a promontory that thrusts 200 yards out into the sea. The 15th hole is next to a waterfall that was featured in a James Bond movie.
Half Moon Golf, Tennis, and Beach Club in Montego Bay is now home to a branch of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy. The par 72, 7,119-yard course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and is well known for its beautiful and tricky layout. Several championships have been held here including the Red Stripe Pro Am and the Jamaican Open. The White Witch at the Ritz-Carlton Golf and Spa Resort on the grounds of the former Rose Hall plantation is Jamaica’s newest golf course. Designed by Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril, the par 71, 6,718-yard course offers spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea. The course is named for Annie Palmer, the so-called witch of Rose Hall.
The Manchester Club in Mandeville is the oldest course on Jamaica. Other courses on the island include SuperClubs Golf Club, formerly Ironshore, in Montego Bay, Sandals Golf and Country Club, Caymanas near Kingston, and the Negril Hills Golf Club.
