Plaza de Armas

Built in the 16th century as San Juan's "Plaza Mayor" or main square. Plaza de Armas has been an important social gathering place for locals since its inception. More importantly, it served during 200 years as the site for military drills to prepare the city inhabitants for enemy attacks, thus the name "Arms Square". The fountain, surrounded by 100-year-old statues representing the four seasons and which dominates the square.

Interesting place with thousands of pidgeons and little old men selling bird food to the tourists and residents. I didn't come here to feed the pidgeons. The fountain is lovely and the Gazebo is as well. There are some small places to get food; two on either end of a facility for telephones and another at the south end. The little food spots sold typical Puerto Rican fast foods; pastelillos and typical candies. It was Sunday when I went, and there had been set up in the center of the park, huge tents under which quite a few vendors sold their wares. Strangers on park benches struck up conversations....

One major convenience: there are a couple of drugstores on one corner. At the Walgreen's you can buy something cheap with your Debit or Credit Card at the register and get extra cash without having to pay the fees you'd have to pay at the ATM machines.
