Just a few minutes' drive from Cruz Bay to a private cul-de-sac on Pocket Money Hill, Mandavilla overlooks St. John's main town of Cruz Bay and myriad green islands in the distance.

The entry to this deluxe villa is flanked by a garden loggia set with table and chairs amongst tropical flowers. You enter the elegantly furnished and beautifully equipped kitchen, dining and living area; this stylish room flows outside onto the spacious verandah, set with comfortable lounging furniture and partly roofed for shade, and featuring a wide-angled ocean view and cooling tradewinds.

On either side of the living area are two nearly-equal, air conditioned king bedroom/bath suites, oversized and plushly outfitted.

An exterior staircase takes you down through more lush gardens to the stunning pool deck and shaded pool cabana complete with chaise lounges. Mandavilla's generous freeform pool and separate Jacuzzi enjoy sunshine all day long and a sunset view too, and are surrounded by gorgeous gardens and custom native bluebit stone terracing and a bench.

Casual elegance with many custom details, original artwork, and the dramatic cantilevered verandah make Mandavilla a very special villa for two or four. On-site management is in apartment below with a separate entrance; he's there if you need him for seasoned advice on island activities and anything else you might want to know, but your vacation privacy is, of course, assured.

On each side of Mandavilla are two brand new villas, Ginger Thomas and Ylang Ylang. You may rent just Mandavilla for one to four persons, or you may also rent Ginger Thomas and/or Ylang Ylang together, to sleep up to 12 persons in three separate villas. Although these villas are next door to each other, privacy between the three properties is well maintained.

Mandavilla is a non-smoking villa.

The view is among the best on St. John, and the
grounds are excellent. A lime, papaya, and starfruit
tree can each be picked and add to a wonderful
breakfast or snack.

The bedrooms are nice and each one has a nice
bathroom.

Having said that, the house isn't well designed. The
outdoor living room is useless during the afternoons
because it's not shaded from the hot sun, which shines
right into it. The (indoor) dining room, likewise, is
hit by the sun any time after 4:00 pm. There is no
curtain on the sliding doors to the dining room and so
a terrible glare emanates from the glass dining room
table. The house's 32" television is in the dining
room. Who wants to watch television from the dining
room table?

Moreover, our party of four arrived on 18 Feb 06 for a
week and found a house with no soap, no dish
detergent, no laundry detergent, no cleaning tools
(e.g., sponges), no promised "CD library," and a pool
that was filled with leaves. Some of these items were
ultimately taken care of, but we found a house that
clearly wasn't ready for visitors.

We've spent time in other villas on St. John. We'll
try to go back to one of those in the future.
