Golden Rock Estate
Golden Rock waits for you high up in the Nevis hills. This hundred-acre 18th century sugar estate is the result of decades of personal owner management and devoted staff. The Estates’ garden courtyard, bordered by luxuriant bougainvillea and orchids is the center of life at Golden Rock. Guests can choose accommodations in one of our intimate cottages or the converted stone tower of the sugar estates’ mill. Between 5:30 and 6pm people linger in the courtyard having a cool drink or afternoon tea under the umbrellas looking for the curious golden glow on the left side of the mountain just before the sun sets…and that’s what Golden Rock is named after.

Rated by cnsandiford on 04/18/06 I’ve heard of hotel operators/managers bending over backwards to make their guests feel at home but I would have to say that Pam Barry, owner of the Golden Rock Estate in Nevis, is by far the most sincere and effortless example of a cliché that has been known to ring hollow in many other instances.
I spent one night at Golden Rock and can honestly say that it was a pleasant experience from making first contact with Mrs. Barry over the phone to waving from the taxi as I was leaving. I had to travel to Nevis on business and did not have a hotel reservation – in the high season of all times. The hotel I would normally have stayed at was booked solid and after calling a few places, I happened upon Mrs. Barry and Golden Rock; I’m so glad now that my usual place was full! I was a bit put out at first because the Estate was a bit out of the way, but at the time I didn’t have much of a choice.
Her quiet and disarming manner began to reassure me immediately over the phone. She gave me her name and told me that she was the owner, took my name and told me that she’d be on the lookout for me in the afternoon.
The property is in a lovely setting – a hillside with a lovely view of the East Coast. The drive inland from the port also gave me the opportunity to take in a bit more of Nevis than the drive to my regular hotel, which is just outside of town. The room was cozy and spacious, with a large four-poster bed, a dresser, a small table, a walk-in cupboard and a rocking chair (warning: no television). The bathroom was easily one of the largest that I’ve seen at a hotel in years, with a makeup table and two mirrors for the ladies  There was also a sitting area with deck chairs outside, which I was told the monkeys sometimes share when they are having breakfast.
I chose to sit outside the restaurant for lunch and dinner; Mrs. Barry, who seems to take a hands-on approach in making her guests feel at home, caught on quickly to the fact that I have a special diet – I have several allergies – and did everything in her power to ensure that everything that I ate was 100% compatible. As I sat taking in the whole setting at dinnertime – the Great House, the trees, the night sounds and the overall hospitable service – I could not help but notice how relaxing it all was, and how peaceful and relaxed I felt as a result. And this was on a business trip! This was mainly thanks to the good treatment that I’d received from Mrs. Barry and her staff from the moment I arrived at the hotel.
I left early the next morning, but not without a promise to Mrs. Barry that I would be back sometime in the future; accompanied and under less hurried circumstances!
