Wajang Doll, Philipsburg
Named for the wajang doll used in Indonesian shadow plays, this restaurant is one of the best Indonesian restaurants in the Caribbean. Its most famous offering is the Indonesian rijsttafel, or rice table. Diners enjoy rice accompanied by a variety of side dishes like beef curry and mango chutney. The number of side dishes can range from 15 to 20. The Wajang Doll also serves Javanese, Balinese, and Sumatran cuisine. Some favorites are the Japanese tempura chicken, the red snapper with ginger, chili, onions, and lemon grass, and the omelettes filled with beef curry. The restaurant is housed in one of Philipsburg’s quaint West Indian-style houses. Diners can enjoy their meal in the restaurant’s open-air dining room, which overlooks the bay. If you’re looking for authentic Indonesian food, this is one restaurant you won’t want to miss.
